The first week of 2025 was marked by intense aerial operations and house burnings in central Myanmar, alongside strategic captures of military outposts by the Arakan Army. Political control tightened through a new Cybersecurity Law, while a mass prisoner amnesty was declared for Independence Day.
Key Events
- On January 5, the Arakan Army (AA) and joint forces captured the Beda checkpoint in Ayeyarwady Region and the Taung Saught Taung camp in Rakhine State, which protected a Chinese gas pipeline substation.
- The Military Council enforced a Cybersecurity Law on January 1, establishing prison terms and fines up to 100 million kyats for unauthorized VPN use.
- On January 4, coinciding with the 77th Independence Day, the junta granted pardons to 5,864 prisoners across facilities nationwide.
- Magway and Sagaing regions suffered the highest property destruction, with 144 and 82 homes burned down respectively by Military Council forces.
- Sagaing Region experienced the heaviest combat toll, reporting 106 SAC soldiers killed and 12 separate airstrikes during the seven-day period.
