June 2023 saw a significant escalation in Karenni State where revolutionary forces captured an entire township (Mese), alongside increased Chinese diplomatic involvement and new US sanctions on state-owned banks. Sagaing remains the most volatile region, accounting for the highest counts of clashes, arson, and arrests.
Key Events
- June 13–24: Karenni revolutionary forces and the Kalalata border guard unit, which defected from the military council, seized all six military bases and the police station in Mese Township, Karenni State.
- June 19: Over 130 people were arrested across Yangon, Ayeyarwady, Sagaing, and Mandalay for participating in a "Flower Strike" to commemorate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s birthday.
- June 21: The US Department of Treasury imposed sanctions on the Ministry of Defense and two state-owned banks (MFDB and MICB), causing the Myanmar kyat to depreciate significantly.
- June 27: A SAC air strike on Nyoung Gone Village in Pale Township, Sagaing Region, killed nine civilians, including a priest, and destroyed 13 homes.
- Late June: The Pact Global Microfinance Fund (PGMF), Myanmar's largest microfinance provider serving 2.3 million people, was forced to cease operations due to new military council registration demands.
