April 2023 saw record-breaking atrocities, notably the Pa Zi Gyi massacre, occurring alongside a significant surge in Track 1.5 diplomatic initiatives by neighboring countries that increasingly engaged with the military junta despite its decreasing territorial control.
Key Events
- On April 11, a military fighter jet and MI35 helicopters attacked a village gathering in Pa Zi Gyi, Kanbalu Township, killing at least 165 people, including 28 children and 24 women.
- In Chin State, the Chin National Army and joint forces destroyed a military convoy of over 30 vehicles, including two tanks, and killed more than 100 soldiers on the road between Falam and Hakha.
- India and Thailand hosted Track 1.5 dialogues involving officials from the military junta and neighboring states (Cambodia, Laos, Bangladesh, Vietnam, China), while excluding the National Unity Government.
